Rocky Mountain National Park is a place that everyone should have on their bucket list. It's a few hours outside of Denver, making it convenient to travel to and is home to some of the largest peaks in the lower 48 states. To top that off Rocky Mountain has some of the largest elk and mule deer herds in the United States.
Rocky Mountain has it all, whether you're a wildlife/landscape photographer or avid hiker. I think it has something for everyone. Some popular hikes include: Emerald lake loop, a moderate, 3.4 mile round trip hike that passes Nymph lake, Dream lake and finally ending at Emerald lake. Some tips is arrive early, preferably 7:00am to get parking. You'll also want to keep in mind its on the Bear Lake road head which does require an additional pass. This is separate from the National Park entry fee. Note: Colorado has extreme weather conditions and can switch on you in a second, please prepare by not biting off more than you can chew. As a rule of thumb be back to the trailhead by noon, another reason why being early is key to having a good experience.
Another little tip is once your in the town of Estes and you happen to arrive late, enter the highway 34 west entrance versus the 36 west entrance. This will cut some time off if the parks busy.
Animal viewing. Colorado is home to the largest elk and mule deer herds. When I say you can't miss the elk or mule deer you can't. But if you're like my dog and have cataracts here's some tips. Some indications to look for are the outline of their ears, white butts, and especially movement. Which means you need to slow down, leave that big city rush back at the hotel. You want the best experience at any national park, SLOW DOWN. Catch your breath, look at the sky, take all that there is to offer. I promise you not only will you be grateful for what you do see but you'd see more than if you raced through the experiences to say you did them.
If you're looking for more information visit the National park website. Just remember the key to seeing animals and views is getting out there. Trust me I'd rather be out than typing on a computer.
